Hydration in the Cold: Lessons from Warfighter Performance
November 11, 2025
We just attended a fantastic webinar by Dr. Nick Barringer on warfighters’ exposure to heat and cold—and how to monitor and manage their performance in extreme environments. One insight that really stuck out was completely counterintuitive: the most dehydrated warfighters weren’t those operating in scorching desert heat, but those in cold, even sub-freezing, conditions.
It’s a powerful reminder as we head into winter that hydration matters just as much—if not more—when it’s cold. In freezing temps (and especially at altitude), your body’s thirst signal drops, urinary output increases, and respiratory water loss rises with every cold breath. That silent combo quietly drains your fluids, tanks performance, slows reaction time, and raises injury risk.
Monitoring hydration doesn’t have to be complicated. Simply weigh yourself before and after activity to see how much fluid you’re losing. You might be surprised by the results.
Here’s a simple Cold-Weather Hydration Checklist to keep you performing your best:
- Pre-hydrate before exposure
- Warm fluids in an insulated bottle
- Electrolytes in every bottle
- Timer for sips every 15–20 minutes
- Track urine color and body weight trends
If you’re thinking, “It’s cold—I’m not sweating much,” think again. The body is constantly losing fluid through breathing and urination, even when you don’t feel thirsty or sweaty. Staying ahead of that loss is key to endurance, cognition, and safety.
Share this with someone who works or plays in the cold—ski patrol, firefighters, ruck crews, winter runners, hunters, SAR members. Keep them hydrated, sharp, and safe this winter.
Because even in the cold, dehydration doesn’t take a season off.
